Audience Feedback

Ben Fisher- Joe's overall project is quite good. I like the way he has stuck with the same colours throughout the magazine. Also I like the masthead as i think this looks very professional and i could see this being used for a real magazine. Also you can see the resemblance of his magazine to a real hip-hop one as he has used similar features to that of XL magazine, so this is why i think he has achieved the look of a real magazine.

Sam Bradley- I like Joe's project because it looks quite real. I think the Double page spread is excellent because of the layout as this looks really good and most importantly real, and overall the layout of the magazine looks really good, if this was a real magazine i would buy it because i like the look of the magazine and because its easy to follow and it isnt jam packed with information which sometimes makes magazines look hard to follow.

Aidan Bintcliffe- This is a good project overall. I like the style of the magazine and the colours used throughout, as he has stuck with the same all the way through, so you know the house style is red, black, and white. You can see from his blog that he has researched in to different magazines currently on the market and tryed to imitate them to the best of his ability, so this has given the magazine a good look. And if this was on a shop shelf it would stand out from the others as it is bold.

Review

1. The magazine I have created is a mainstream hip-hop magazine. For me to create my magazine I have used various Hip-Hop, and R&B magazines to help me with mine. I have looked through them to find different layouts they use and the colours used in there magazines. I have tried to copy XXL magazine which is a mainstream Hip-Hop magazine with there colours and there mast head. So I have mainly used black, white and red which is the house style of XXL and I have used only three fonts to keep in touch with house style of XXL. I have copied this because when the viewing public see my magazine they will know its Triple XL Magazine. For my main page picture I have copied an issue of a Rolling Stones magazine. So overall I think my magazine look similar to XXL magazine.

2. For my pictures that I have taken I have tried to copy gangster pictures that were in official magazines. So for the pictures I took, I tried to make each of the participants look angry and as if they wanted to punch somebody, as this mediates gangsters as this is typical as they always look angry and never smile. Also I have tried to make them wear baggy clothes which represents gangsters as it’s very stereotypical on a gangster to never wear tight clothes. So by doing this people will know what genre of magazine mine is as it looks hip-hop.

3. If my magazine was getting distributed it would be a big conglomerate company distributing it, like Bauer or IPC media, and it would be getting distributed to every small and big shop all over the U.K. I wouldn’t use an independent company to distribute my magazine as they wouldn’t have the money and sources to get my magazine promoted throughout the U.K and the rest of the world. A reason for using a conglomerate company would be that there are already Hip-Hop magazine on the market so I would need a big company to promote it as I would be in competition with magazines such as XXL, and the Source. I would also have large circulatory figures as Bauer magazines all have large circulatory figures as many people would be reading my new magazine. I would get my magazine promoted through as many cross media as I could. The main one would be the internet as my magazine has its own website http://www.triplexlmag.co.uk/ so the viewing public could access my magazine through that. Also I could use facebook to promote my magazine as these types of social networking sites have millions on users so this would be very useful. Also I would promote it through T.V such as adverts and also as it would be a big company like Bauer distributing it then I could also get a music channel like Q. and this would promote my magazine as then on the channel I could advertise the magazine through the channel and also I could get interview with music stars. Another way on promoting my music magazine Triple XL would be to have a radio show like Kerrang and I could play all the music that would be in my magazine.

4. The target audience I am promoting my magazine to is 18-25+ year olds mainly males, as I think they are the most likely to listen and like hip-hop, so I think they would buy my magazine and give me the most profits. A typical audience member would be someone would listens to rap/ Hip-Hop, predominately black like the picture a have, and dresses in baggy clothes.

5. Both of the rappers are looking not at the camera but straight at each other, this is because they are in battle with each other over who can be the king of Hip-Hop. Also the main colours (house style) of the magazine are white, black, and red, this is because the buying public will know exactly were to look on the shop shelf as they will know that is Triple XL magazine. Also the masthead in the top left hand corner is always the same as then it will stand out to the buyer as it is always a red box with Triple XL written in white. The main cover line is where it says showdown, the public know it’s the two people on the front cover who are having the showdown and we know is going to be a big story because it says it’s an exclusive and they are the only magazine to get the story. It also stands out as its red writing on a white background. It also says features so the public know it will include all stories on all of the names mentioned, so this will attract the viewing public.
6. While completing my project have a learnt many new skills on different programmes such as Photoshop. I have learned techniques such as how to delete backgrounds, how to change an image, adding boxes, and writing onto pictures, and I have used these many times throughout completing my project which has helped me alot. I have also learned how to use blogger as this is a very easy way to upload your work onto the internet so other people can see it, and it also arranges so you can easily read it. I also learnt how to use Quark I this was a good was to complete your contents and double page spread as you could set all the work out so it was evenly spaced out My main weakness was going round pictures to get rid of the background as you have to be very precise while doing this and I didn’t have the patience.
7. As i have complete my project i have a good understanding of how each of the software works that i have used. To start with i was ok with the with my college magazine, but as i have got on to my final piece i know alot more techniques to use to make my project better and look more professional.
From the conventions i have a good understanding as i know what should be on a front cover e.g. barcode, price, masthead..
The planning was quite important because this helped me structure my project to make it easier for me.
Audience feedback was also important to me because it helped me to choose which of the magazines they liked and looked professional.

This is the picture i took with a black background. What i needed to do was to go round all his body and delete the black background.

Once i deleted the background, i put the image on to a solid black background.

Bauer and ICP media

Bauer

Bauer owns many magazines throughout the U.K. Each week Bauer sells over 5.7 million magazines to the U.K
The music magazines Bauer owns are Kerrang, Mojo, and Q.
The costs of the magazines are:
Mojo- £4.30
Q- £3.90
Kerrang- £2.20

The magazines Bauer caters for
Are mainstream. I know this
because as you look at the cover
it doesn’t just cater for one
particular type of music it advertises different type of bands. Q magazine is advertising Take That, and Metallica + many more, so these are pop and metal, so Q caters for a variety of people.

IPC Media

IPC Media almost two in every three UK women and over 44% of UK men read an IPC magazine. That's over 26 million UK adults
The music magazines IPC Media own are NME, Guitar+Bass and Uncut
The costs of these magazines are:
NME £2.20
Guitar+Bass £3.95
Uncut £4.40

The magazines Bauer caters for
Are mainstream. I know this
Because as you look at the cover
It doesn’t just cater for one
Particular type of music it advertises different type of bands. NME magazine is advertising Pete Doherty, Blur, and Kings of Leon + many more, so these are indie, and pop rock, so they cater for a variety of people.

Since the launch in 1986, Q has been the UK’s best selling music monthly magazine. With its unrivalled access it has delivered the world’s biggest music stars every month.
Q’s ABC figures dating from Jul-Dec08 are 103,017.
So Q retains its pre-eminent position as the number one music monthly brand in the UK and across Europe. Q’s demographic readership is the mainly older people who are aged 25+. You know this because of the type of bands they have in there magazine e.g. U2 as these are aimed at the older generation.

Mojo ABC figures are 100,507. Mojo’s demographic Readership is older people aged probably 35+. You Can tell this because of the bands on the front cover e.g. the stooges at this kind of band is for the oldergeneration

At 73,640 NME is up 5.2% on the period and an equally strong 5.2% on the year. So ABC’s figures are at 73,640. NME’s demographic readership is the mainly younger people who are aged 16+. You know this because of the type of bands they have in there magazine as they are popular bands who are in the charts e.g. dizzee rascal, kaiser chiefs as these are aimed at the younger generation.

Treatment and Development

Treatment and Development

Name of magazine- Triple XL
Production team- Ben, Brian, Sam, Matt

Synopsis- my magazine is a mainstream Hip-Hop/R&B magazine,

Target audience- my target audience will be mainly male’s age range from 18-25 years old, so I will be aiming to sell my magazine to these people.

Photography design-
Front cover- Ben and Brian, I need to take a photo of each person facing sideways and will be a close up of just their head and looking serious. This will be done with the white background behind them so I can easily cut round their faces on Photoshop and I will make them look like they are looking at each other.
Double page spread- this will be on main picture Sam about him new album over the whole page but will be faded so you can see the writing. I will use the white background and I will be taking a photo of his whole body. This is going to be in the style of an interview so Q and A.
All photos are going to be taken in TRC.

Research- the style of my magazine is like XXL magazine because I am doing a Hip-Hop magazine. For the double page spread I have research the techniques and I am going to have a picture of Sam with the Q&A Round the side of the page
Recce considerations- I am going to be using M236 for taking my photographs in so the evacuation assembly point in the event of fire or other emergency is the Front Football Pitch and the nearest First Aider is Vicky Rowntree in M138 or one of the Sports Staff in SD3. The health and safety I need to watch out for are wires on the floor so nobody trips on them, make sure nobody puts drink or food near any of the equipment.

Q magazine annotation.

Each band member is looking straight at the camera direct gaze while its looks like they are breaking though the camera screen. They are doing this because there album was a big hit when it was released at the end of last year so there album was a breakthrough.
The title of the magazine is Q and I think this could mean that the magazine asks the questions and the musicians give the answers.
You know the magazine by the look because Q magazine always has a red box in the left corner with the letter Q in white and this is so the readers know where to look and also so it stands out to the buyers.

Where is says ‘Play time for the Killers’ there are two arrow heads so this mean that the killers features inside the magazine. And also ‘the 50 best albums of 2008’ had two arrow heads so this suggests it also can be found inside the magazine. Also the killers is shown in red writing and in capital letters and this is so it stands out better so that one off buyers know there are in the magazine.

The main cover line is the ‘Kings of Leon Breakthrough’. This is much bigger size font than the rest, and to make it stand out it has a white background around the writing as the magazine is dark colour so it makes it stand out.

The main picture covers a bit of the masthead. But you can still see what the magazine is.

The barcode has all the information needed like the price and date.

The page consists of one main picture and three other little pictures around the page. The main picture is off the artist Craig David with the car behind him so we know the article is something to do about cars. We know this also because at the top of the page it quotes “Beat the track record”.

Down the side of the page the name Craig David is in bold light blue writing, so this is how we know who he is. It also says he is the R&B smoothie so this is why the writing is in light blue because it is a soft gentle colour.
Also the page is very bright and soft as the page is light blue and the pictures are very colourful so this could connote that he is a very upbeat person who is smooth.

The page number is in the bottom of each of the pages; it is written in white with a black box round the writing to so it helps create a house style, also next to the number is the Q.

The main picture consists of Craig David looking away from the camera while he is moving so he is gazing off the page

The start of both the paragraphs starts with two drop down capital T’s.
There are two columns of text on each page and they are set out like a newspaper, and they are set around each of the pictures.
